1976 silver proof sets

...anyone know the silver content off hand? 90% or 40%? Thanks!

FWIW - I may have made a Fleabay guy very happy.:banghead:

In '76 they made a regular proof set, and also some 90% silver 3 coin sets.

I have a bunch of these that I bought just above spot silver price. The mint struck many millions of them for the bicentennial. They won't ever have much numismatic value to collectors.

from my vast collection of scans:

Thank you much!

Ahh, actually unfortunately for you, they are 40% silver. All 90% silver coinage production was halted in 1964 (well, they were dated 1964 even if production of the halves continued for another 2-3 years). Then restarted again in the '90's.

I was just looking at them on APMEX and now I'm not sure if they are 40% or 90% again?

Their price could be for 90% or just a huge premium on 40% numi.

darn. I thought those were 90%. :shocked_ma:

Oh well, I bought them in the 1990s when the silver spot price was about $4.

Actually the 1st 90% Silver coin produced since 1964 dated coins were the 1982 George Washington commorative half dollars. That was also the 1st commorative coin since the Washington Carver halves from the early
1950s. :smokin:

No harm there then.

Lucky me, someone else bid $23.50 plus $3.99 shipping on the set. He must be thinking 90% to.

.......or not thinking at all.:smokin:

Picked up a nice morgan for just a touch over melt with shipping. Wanted the kids to be able to fondle some 100 year old silver.:applause_

I've got a couple of those 1982 George Washington halves. Does their current value reflect any significance to being the first after many years?

I bought a few 3 piece 40% silver mint and proof sets back in "76" for my self.

$5 for the mint set and $7 for the proof set when new if I recall correctly?

Yes, quite correct. I forgot about commemorative issues.

I doubt it, they made quite a few millions of these in unc and proof. IMO main driver of their value is silver content followed by some collector interest.:smokin:
